Kasey Spencer

I’m always looking for ways to turn everyday stuff into something fun or useful. Plastic bottles—those things we all toss out without thinking—actually have way more potential than you’d expect.

Upcycled Bottle Crafts

Upcycling plastic bottles is a super easy and eco-friendly way to make new things for your home without spending much or adding to the landfill.

Here are 15 projects I’ve tried (or want to try!) to give old bottles a second shot at life.

1. Wine Bottle Tiki Torches for Outdoor Ambiance

Several wine bottles repurposed as tiki torches with small flames flickering, arranged outdoors in a garden setting during twilight.

I grab empty wine bottles and turn them into tiki torches for my patio. They throw off a soft glow and, if you fill them with citronella oil, help keep the bugs away.

It’s really just fuel, a wick, and some pebbles to weigh them down. They look cool and don’t cost much.

2. Clear Plastic Bottle Chandeliers with LED Lights

Several clear plastic bottle chandeliers with LED lights hanging in a modern room.

I’ve made a few chandeliers from clear plastic bottles—they’re quirky but surprisingly stylish. LED lights inside give off a soft, dreamy glow. It’s cheap, it’s green, and it makes a statement.

3. DIY Bird Feeders from Glass Bottles

Several glass bottle bird feeders hanging from tree branches in a garden with birds feeding on them.

Old glass bottles make great bird feeders. I twist some wire and use a couple of tools, and suddenly I’ve got a feeder that brings birds right up close. It’s quick, cheap, and saves a bottle from the trash.

4. Colorful Planters Made from Painted Plastic Bottles

Painted plastic bottles make for surprisingly cheerful planters. I mess around with colors and patterns—sometimes it’s a hit, sometimes it’s a bit wild. Either way, they’re perfect for small plants and they definitely brighten up a shelf or windowsill.

5. Decorative Vases from Cut Wine Bottles

I carefully cut old wine bottles and smooth the edges to make vases. Sometimes I wrap them in twine or blast them with a bit of spray paint for extra flair. They’re great for flowers—fresh or dried—and they look way more expensive than they actually are.

6. Plastic Bottle Robot Crafts for Kids

Several colorful robots made from recycled plastic bottles displayed on a table with craft supplies around them in a bright home craft room.

Plastic bottle robots are a hit with kids (and, honestly, kind of fun for adults too). We use bottles, caps, and whatever random bits we find, and suddenly we’ve got a robot army. It’s a playful way to recycle and let kids’ creativity run wild.

7. Recycled Bottle Soap Dispensers

I turn empty bottles into soap dispensers—just screw on a pump, and you’re done. Sometimes I’ll paint or decorate them, sometimes I don’t bother. Either way, it’s useful and keeps another bottle out of the trash.

8. Glass Bottle Fairy Light Jars

I love stuffing empty glass bottles with tiny fairy lights for some cozy mood lighting. It’s almost too easy—just clean a bottle, cram in the lights, and plug them in. Instantly, the room feels warmer.

9. Flower-Shaped Plastic Bottle Wall Art

Cutting and shaping plastic bottles into flower shapes is surprisingly satisfying. I paint them wild colors and stick them up on the wall. It’s a cheap, eco-friendly way to get some art on the walls.

10. Table Number Holders from Wine Bottles

Several upcycled wine bottles used as table number holders arranged on a wooden table with natural decorations.

I use empty wine bottles as table number holders for parties. I’ll cut them to different heights, smooth the edges, and maybe add some ribbon or twine. They look classy and—bonus—don’t cost a thing.

11. Upcycled Bottle Herb Garden Planters

Cut plastic bottles make perfect herb garden planters. I keep basil and mint growing on the windowsill, and it’s nice not having to buy new pots. Plus, it’s one less bottle in the bin.

12. Hanging Bottle Terrariums

Several hanging glass bottle terrariums containing green plants and moss, suspended by twine indoors.

I make hanging terrariums out of old bottles. They’re perfect for small spaces and don’t need much care. I cut the bottles, add a bit of soil and a tiny plant, and hang them up with twine. They look great and bring in a bit of green.

13. Bottle Cap Mosaic Art Pieces

I collect bottle caps and glue them onto a board to make colorful mosaic art. It’s kind of addictive, arranging all the colors and shapes. The result is always unique, even if it’s not perfect.

14. Outdoor Bottle Lanterns with Candles

Several glass bottle lanterns with candles inside arranged on a wooden table outdoors surrounded by plants.

I cut glass bottles in half and use them as lanterns for candles. The glass keeps the wind out, so the flame doesn’t go out so easily. They look great on the patio, especially at night.

15. Bottle Wall Shelves from Stacked Glass Bottles

Wall shelves made from stacked glass bottles holding plants and decorative items in a modern interior.

I stacked glass bottles to build a wall shelf. The bottles hold up the shelves and honestly, they look pretty cool. This DIY project gives my room some extra storage and a bit of quirky style.
