The Ultimate Spring Cleaning Checklist

The Ultimate Spring Cleaning Checklist

Let’s be honest: the idea of spring cleaning can feel completely overwhelming. You know your home needs a fresh start, but staring at every room and wondering where to even begin is enough to make you want to forget the whole thing. I’ve felt that way too.

Ultimate Spring Cleaning

This checklist is here to solve that. It breaks everything down into clear, manageable tasks, room by room. Think of it as your practical, step-by-step guide to a cleaner, fresher home without the stress.

Just take it one step at a time.

Here is your ultimate, room-by-room spring cleaning checklist.

1. The Decluttering Pass (Do This First)

Before you clean a single surface, take a box or bag and walk through each room. Quickly pick up anything that is obviously trash, broken, or hasn’t been used in over a year. Don’t overthink it. The goal is to remove the excess stuff that gets in your way. A less cluttered room is infinitely easier and faster to clean deeply.

2. Living Room & Common Areas

  1. Furniture: Move couches and chairs to vacuum or mop underneath. Vacuum all upholstery, including cushions (lift and remove them).
  2. Surfaces: Dust all surfaces from top to bottom—ceiling fan blades, light fixtures, shelves, picture frames, and electronics.
  3. Windows & Coverings: Wipe down window sills and blinds. Vacuum or lightly shake out curtains.
  4. Details: Wash throw blankets and pillow covers. Disinfect light switches and remote controls. Vacuum baseboards and corners where dust bunnies hide.

3. Kitchen

  1. Appliances: Pull out the refrigerator and stove to clean behind and underneath them. Clean the inside of the microwave and oven (use the self-clean function or a good oven cleaner). Run a cleaning cycle for the dishwasher and washing machine with a specialized cleaner or vinegar.
  2. Cabinets & Drawers: Wipe down the exterior of all cabinets and drawers. Empty, wipe out, and reorganize one or two key drawers or pantry shelves.
  3. Sink & Countertops: Disinfect the sink and scrub around the faucet. Deep-clean countertops and backsplashes.
  4. Details: Empty and wipe out the crumb tray to the toaster. Wash kitchen towels, oven mitts, and the trash/recycling bins.

4. Bedrooms

  1. Bedding: Strip the bed and wash all bedding, including the mattress pad, pillows (check labels), and comforters.
  2. Closets: Do a quick closet edit. Remove off-season clothes and donate items you no longer wear. Vacuum the closet floor.
  3. Surfaces: Dust all furniture, light fixtures, and decor. Under the bed is a major dust zone—vacuum thoroughly.
  4. Details: Wipe down mirrors, door handles, and switch plates. Rotate the mattress if it’s recommended for your type.

5. Bathrooms

  1. Shower & Tub: Scrub the tub/shower walls, door/curtain, and floor. Soak the showerhead in vinegar to remove mineral deposits.
  2. Toilet: Clean the toilet inside and out, including the base and behind the lid.
  3. Sink & Vanity: Empty the vanity, wipe it out, and discard old products. Disinfect the sink and faucet.
  4. Details: Wash the bath mat, shower curtain, and liner. Wipe down mirrors, cabinets, and all surfaces. Mop the floor last.

6. Often-Missed Spots

  1. Vents & Filters: Wipe dust off air vents and vent covers. Replace HVAC air filters.
  2. Doors & Walls: Wipe down doors, doorframes, and handprints on light switches and walls.
  3. Lighting: Carefully dust or wash light fixture covers and lampshades.
  4. Floors (Final Step): Vacuum all carpets and rugs thoroughly, then mop all hard-surface floors throughout the house.

Your Final Tip

Don’t try to do it all in one day. Tackle one room or even one category per day. Put on some music, open the windows for fresh air, and celebrate your progress as you go. You’ve got this.
